Trip Overview

Tiji Festival in Lo-mantang (Upper Mustang)

It is a great time for you this trip coincides with the end of the dry season and thus overlaps with the Tiji Festival. In the monsoon while celebrating the triumph of good over evil in a ritual locals call the chasing of the demons. Tiji comes from the worlds ten Che Meaning of the hope of the Dharma prevailing in all worlds. This message Guru Rinpoche carried through this region over thousand and thousand years ago. This trek will start from Kathmandu and we travel to Pokhara by tourist bus (spend overnight in Pokhara). In the morning we fly to Jomsom airport. The Jomsom airport  is about 2,800m from the sea level. Jomsom is headquarter of Mustang district where many trekkers will meet from the Annapurna Circuit Trek and Jomsom Muktinath trekking.

Kagbeni is the first night sleep in the mountain at 3,100m. And at the same day or next morning before leaving to Chhuksang we need to obtain a special trekking permit to go to Chaile, Sumare, Ghilling, Dhakmar, Lo-manthang (Lo-kingdom) and Mustang. There is also side trips to Namgel Gompa, Choiser Cave, Yara, Tange, Tetang  then Muktinath. The Tiji Festival consists of three days of Tibetan rituals. The Tiji centers around a myth which tells of a deity named Dorje Jono who must battle against his demon father to save tge jubgdin if Nystabg rin destruction. Tiji means the hope of Buddha Dharma prevailing in all words and effectively a spring renewal festival. During this trek the town will be busier than usual, so we need to pre-book the Hotel or Guesthouse. According to the Tibetan Calendar, the dates for the Tiji Festival 2021 in Lomantang  will be celebrated from 9th – 11th May.
