Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world at 8485m above sea level. It is located in the Mahalangur Himalayas 19km southeast of Mount Everest, on the border between Nepal and Tibet Autonomous Region, China. It was first summited on May 15, 1955, by Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy of a French expedition led by Jean Franco. Makalu Base Camp Trek takes you to high-altitude terrains, ethnic Himalayan lifestyle, and snowy landscapes.
Trekking in this region was closed to outsiders until the 1950s when Eric Shipton first trekked into this region. It is possible now to perform the Tea house trek on this route as simpler accommodations are developed or established there. This route goes through Makalu Barun National Park which consists of pristine wilderness and beautiful flora and fauna. From this viewpoint, one can observe the beautiful mountain ranges including Mt.Everest, Mt.Lhotse, Mt.Chamlang, etc. This trek can be fairly challenging as trekking through the tough trails and reaching the heart of one of the mighty mountains is much more difficult than we think.
