Makalu Base Camp Trek

24 Days

Trip Overview

Makalu is the 5th highest mountain in the world and is located in the Khumbu Region of Northern Nepal. The Makalu-Barun valley surrounding the Makalu is the least populated area in Nepal and is full of beautiful glaciers. The trek through this region offers lesser traffic, an off beaten path, high altitude terrains, snow clad landscapes and a chance to view the ethnic lifestyle of people residing in the area. Another attraction is the passage through the Makalu Barun National Park which offers properly preserved endangered animals and plant species. Surrounding peaks of Everest, Kanchanjunga and Lhotse are also visible during the trek.

A flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar commences the trek, followed by a bumpy drive to Chichila. Through picturesque villages, the trail reaches to Num. A descend through forests and terraced paths next brings the village Seduwa which is followed by a trek to Tashigaon. The trail then ascends upwards to Khongma via rhododendron forests.

After a day of acclimatization, trekkers cross the Shipton La and trek to Debotay accompanied by marvelous views of Chamlang, Peak 6 and Peak 7 along with the KeKe La pass. The next destination is the Yangle Kharka and then to Merek which is over 4000 m. proper acclimatization is required at this point after which Shersong is reached after passing through yak pastures and boulder fields. The Makalu Base Camp follows next with serene views of snow capped peaks all around it.  Yangle Kharka and Mumbuk follow next after which a descent brings the Khongma village. The same path is retraced to reach back to Kathmandu thus ending the trek.

This one of a kind trek with beautiful views provides an excellent opportunity to experience both the wilderness as well as the tranquility of the Makalu Barun region. This raw, virgin area is a must do for trekkers with a need for adventure.
