The combination of the Kanchanjanga Conservation Area and the third highest peak of the world, the Kanchanjanga make up the Kanchanjanga trekking trial. The trail is situated in the eastern side of Nepal, borders Nepal with the Indian state of Sikkim and provides the perfect trekking location for thrill seekers. The five mountain peaks that make up the Kanchanjanga give it its name, meaning the five treasure houses of snow. The Kanchanjanga trail has a remote and challenging beauty which makes it worth trying. For some lucky trekkers’ snow leopards, Himalayan Black Bear, Assamese Macaque among others can be seen along this trial. Tales of the Yeti and lesser crowd make it uniquely satisfying and adventurous.
Sukhetar present in Taplejung marks the commencement of this one of a kind trek. Passage through lush forests with the variety of plant and animal species brings the Lali-Kharga at a height of 2220m. Before further trekking, proper acclimatization is absolutely mandatory. Walking further through rural landscapes and Limbu villages brings Chirwa via Mitlung. Upon crossing the Tamor and the Ghunsa River, trekkers reach Sukhathum after which the trial becomes more challenging. Amjilosa is reached after passing through tricky and rocky gorges.
The trial then passes through Gyabla into Ghunsa along with views of high waterfalls, bridges and various rivers. A visit can be planned into the Tibetan refugee settlement and the Laspan La monastery. Mt. Jannu and Nupchu Khola Valley can be viewed along the path from Ghunsa to Kambachen. Further passage through rocky fields and large stones brings the Pangpema. Pangema is the northern Base Camp of Kanchanjanga. A further climb can be done for viewing the snow capped pristine peaks like the Jannu, Kanchanjanga and Chang Himal. Retracing the same path ends the trek.
There is an alternative to the conventional return path which passes through Ghunsa, Sele Le, Cheram, Ramche, Tortong, Yamphudin, Yangpang, Thorpu, Birtamod and finally back to Kathmandu which gives an added opportunity to pass through passes and relish the cultural and social variety of Nepal along with occasional views of other snow capped peaks.
