Helambu region is inhabited by Tamang and Sherpa populations and lies in the Langtang region, north of Kathmandu. Being present near Kathmandu, this trek is a short but a scenic and rewarding one. The entire region is inhabited by brightly colored prayer flags and denotes the geographical and social versatility of the region. This trek trail extends from Taramarang to the Gosaikunda Lake and is comparatively an easier one. Less people opt for the trail making it lesser crowded, but proper lodging facilities are however available. Helambu region incorporates views of snow capped mountains, pine and rhododendron forests, swift flowing mountain streams and glaciers. The trek also offers a chance to mingle with warm, welcoming inhabitants of the Langtang Valley.
The short drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal commences the trek, which is followed by a 3-4 trek to Chisapani via Mulkharga through the Shaivapuri Wildlife Reserve. Descending further with exquisite views of Everest and Annapurna brings the Pathi bhanjyang and Gul Bhanjyang and a steep climb to Kutumsang. The walk through the views of the pristine Himalayas like Dorje Lakpa, Gaurishankar, Langshisa, Jugal, Numbur and many others brings Yurin Dada and eventually Tharepati. . Melamchi Gaon is a perfect lodging destination here with forests all around and the Melamchi Khola downhill. Helambu village is then reached after a further climb from Melamchi Khola. Helambu Village is adorned with many monasteries and the unique Sherpa traditions and offers a chance to intermingle with the warm inhabitants here. Most people residing here are of the Helmu caste and this village is also named as the Tarkheghyang.
The same path can be retraced back to Kathmandu thus ending the trek. However, the trail can be extended to explore the other marvels and the cultural and geographical variety of the Langtang region.
